Professional Experience

Mike has been a litigation attorney specializing in business cases for 28 years.  During the first 11 years of his legal career, he honed his trial skills trying cases as a public defender in Sacramento. In 1985 he joined Weintraub Genshlea & Sproul, the leading business law firm in Sacramento.  During 15 years at Weintraub, Mike was a senior litigation partner, head of the litigation department and for four years the firm’s managing partner.  In 2000 he moved to Bend to be closer to family and joined Karnopp Petersen.  Since 2003 he has been head of the firm’s litigation department.   He also served two terms as managing partner.  

Mike's practice emphasizes real property, corporate, trust and estates, and contract cases.   Mike and the other dispute resolution lawyers at Karnopp Petersen specialize in helping clients resolve legal disputes cost effectively.   Mike has successfully represented many clients in mediations, arbitrations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. If going to court is needed, Mike has a wealth of litigation and trial experience in both state and federal courts. 

 Professional Activities and Honors

Mike has served as a continuing legal education lecturer and panelist on various aspects of business litigation and trial practice.  In 1992 the National Law Journal recognized Mike for receiving the second most important jury trial defense verdict in the nation for 1991. In 1998 Mike was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and from 2003 to 2008 he was appointed to serve on the Oregon State Committee of the College. Between 2000 and 2002 Mike served as Special Counsel to the Oregon Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability. In 2008 and again in 2010 Mike was selected for the Oregon Super Lawyer list for Business Litigation.  In 2012 Mike was selected to be included in The Best Lawyers in America, 19th edition for work in the practice area of Commercial Litigation.

Community Activities and Personal Interests

Mike is an active member of the Rotary Club of Bend and serves as assistant scoutmaster and troop committee chair of his son’s Boy Scout troop.  His favorite pastimes are reading, sailing, hiking and cross country skiing.  Mike lives in Bend with his wife Julie, who works as a medical assistant, and his youngest son, Ben.
