Sunriver, Oregon: On the Road
Located 18 miles south of Bend, the unincorporated community of Sunriver has been attracting residents and visitors for almost 40 years. Situated along the Deschutes River, the private community offers lodging and outdoor activities to thousands of guests annually.
In early 2007, the
county service district, which provides fire and police
services, was confronted with an issue regarding the ability to
enforce traffic laws and the classification of Sunriver’s
roadways for law enforcement purposes. To resolve this
important public safety issue, the Sunriver Owners Association
turned to their attorneys at Central Oregon law firm, Karnopp
Petersen LLP for advice. It was soon determined that new
legislation was needed to remedy the issue. Karnopp Petersen
assisted the Sunriver Owners Association in every step of the
legislative process, from helping draft a bill and testimony,
to working with other stakeholders assuring that the bill had
broad political support in the community.
The effort was successful, culminating in the passage of a legislative bill, signed into law by Governor Kulongoski on June 1st, 2007.
